The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed 491,000 tablets of Tramadol valued at N91 million in Kano State, marking a significant step in its ongoing war against illicit drug circulation.
The consignment, seized by the Nigeria Customs Service, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, was officially handed over to NAFDAC and incinerated on Wednesday at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Representing the NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, at the destruction exercise was the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade.
“We commend the Nigeria Customs Service for their vigilance in intercepting this illegal consignment. On May 28, 2025, their Kano/Jigawa Command, under Comptroller Abubakar Zurmi, intercepted 491 rolls of Tramadol, each roll containing 10 x 10 x 10 tablets, amounting to 491,000 tablets of 225mg strength,” she said.
Adeyeye explained that the smugglers abandoned the drugs when confronted by operatives of the NCS. The intercepted consignment, with a duty value estimated at N91 million, was then handed over to NAFDAC for destruction in line with international best practices.
She noted that the incineration was carried out in full public view to reinforce transparency and public trust in regulatory efforts to stem the tide of drug abuse in Nigeria.
“This is a testament to the strength of inter-agency collaboration and our collective resolve to dismantle the criminal networks behind the trafficking of illicit pharmaceuticals,” she added.
She urged Nigerians to support the agency’s efforts by reporting suspicious activities involving drug distribution to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Also present at the event were the NAFDAC Kano Zonal Coordinator, Kasim Ibrahim, and a representative of the AKTH Chief Medical Director.
