The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to provide full transparency regarding his administration’s alleged proposed plan to construct a new Government House Secretariat, raising questions about fiscal responsibility and public accountability.
In a statement signed by the PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the party urged the governor to disclose the total cost and details of the contract, suggesting that the move appears ill-timed and suspicious given the economic realities in the state.
The PDP expressed concern that the project, coming with just under two years left in Abdulrazaq’s tenure, offers no urgent or clear benefit to the public, especially when many communities in the state still suffer from poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and failing schools.
Highlighting past expenditures, the party noted that in 2021 alone, the state allocated over N3.2 billion for renovations on the existing Government House, an edifice the governor has reportedly refused to use since assuming office. This, the PDP argues, makes the case for a new building not only unnecessary but irresponsible.
The opposition also questioned the choice of a foreign contractor for the proposed work, saying it contradicts the administration’s earlier promises to support local businesses and empower indigenous contractors as part of its economic agenda.
“Instead of tackling pressing challenges like poverty, bad roads, and rural neglect, the government is investing in another white elephant project,” the statement read, accusing the administration of placing image over impact.
The PDP said it believes the project could be a cover for looting and called on civil society groups, the media, and citizens to demand accountability and resist attempts to misuse public resources.
At a time when families are grappling with inflation and basic survival, the party concluded, the government must be guided by urgency and need, not vanity or politics.
