In a bold step toward gender equality, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has launched the domestication of the National Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy, making Kwara the first state in North-Central Nigeria to adopt the national framework.
Speaking during the launch in Ilorin on Wednesday, the governor said the initiative is aimed at removing structural barriers that limit women’s access to economic opportunities, including public contracts and leadership roles.
“I urge everyone to invest in women’s education, skills, and businesses so that no woman is left behind, and every girl can aspire to greatness,” AbdulRazaq said.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, the policy is a continuation of the administration’s consistent push for gender inclusion. He noted that Kwara has previously set a benchmark with the Gender Composition Bill, mandating at least 35% female representation in appointments and having a cabinet that once had over 56% women.
Organised by the Office of the First Lady, Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, in collaboration with Ajike People’s Support Centre and Eden Venture Group, the event attracted high-profile attendees including Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim (represented by Dr Jummai Idonije), and other key government and traditional leaders.
The First Lady highlighted the barriers faced by Nigerian women in accessing education, finance, and market opportunities but praised ongoing efforts to close these gaps.
“These barriers are being dismantled through strategic investments and policies like the WEE domestication, which creates a supportive environment for women to thrive,” she said.
She applauded Governor AbdulRazaq for championing gender equity, citing the establishment of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and passage of the VAPP Act as milestones.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Afolashade Opeyemi, also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting women through consistent policy actions.
Dr Idonije praised the new initiative, noting it would open more economic doors for women in the state. CEO of HACEY, Mrs Roda Robinson, called the policy a “transformational tool” capable of unlocking the full potential of women in development.
Representing Eden Venture Group, Miss Fifehan Osikolu applauded the First Lady and the governor for their unwavering dedication to women’s advancement.
