The Kwara State Government has commenced a specialized training program for health workers aimed at reducing maternal and child mortality across the state.
Speaking at the launch of the training, the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Prof. Nusirat Elelu, said the initiative is designed to equip participants with critical skills and information to provide quality care and prevent avoidable deaths among mothers and children.
Prof. Elelu was represented by Dr. Michael Oguntoye, the Director of Primary Health Care Systems and Programme Manager of the IMPACT project.
The Executive Secretary emphasized that the training will significantly improve service delivery in health facilities, particularly during childbirth. According to her, one of the key components of the program is training on the use of the Partograph—a vital tool for monitoring maternal and fetal well-being during labor.
She noted that when used correctly, the Partograph can enable early detection of complications and prompt referrals, thereby improving maternal outcomes.
“The importance of this training cannot be overemphasized. It is a crucial step toward reducing maternal deaths in Kwara and enhancing the delivery process for babies,” she said.
Prof. Elelu also praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his commitment and continued investment in the state’s health sector.
She urged participants to make the most of the opportunity by engaging fully and applying the knowledge gained to improve healthcare services for the benefit of all residents.
