Jon Jones Bows Out of UFC, Aspinall Becomes Undisputed Champion

Mixed martial arts legend Jon Jones has officially retired from the UFC, ending one of the most iconic careers in combat sports history. His exit clears the path for British fighter Tom Aspinall, who has now been declared the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

The announcement came on Saturday, June 21, during a press conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, where UFC President Dana White revealed that Jones informed officials of his decision late Friday night. The 37-year-old, who last defended his title against Stipe Miocic in November 2023, chose to step down after months of speculation over his future in the octagon.

“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,” Jones wrote in a heartfelt statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.”

Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, retires with an extraordinary professional record of 28 wins, 1 loss, and 1 no contest. He holds the distinction of being the youngest champion in UFC history and had dominated both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions during his career.

Though fans had anticipated a unification fight between Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall, ongoing delays and the American fighter’s absence led to growing calls for clarity. With Jones’ departure now confirmed, Aspinall, who has held the interim belt for 18 months, has been officially crowned the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

The UFC’s heavyweight division now enters a new era, with Aspinall expected to headline future events as the new face of the category. Meanwhile, Jones bows out with grace, thanking fans, fellow fighters, and the UFC for a career filled with historic moments and unforgettable battles.

“MMA will always be a part of who I am,” Jones wrote. “The best is yet to come.”
