The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has called on Nigerians to use their U.S. visas strictly for the purpose they were granted, warning against any form of misuse that could jeopardize future travel opportunities.
This caution comes in response to concerns raised by the U.S. Government over the rising trend of Nigerian visa holders violating the conditions of their stay.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, reminded citizens that the terms attached to every visa must be followed carefully. He emphasized that deviating from those terms, such as overstaying or engaging in activities not covered by the visa could lead to serious consequences, including visa revocation, deportation, or even a permanent ban from reapplying.
“All travelers are expected to follow the purpose outlined in their visa applications,” he said. “The U.S. authorities continue to monitor compliance, not just at entry points but throughout the duration of stay.”
He also issued a special advisory to Nigerian students in the United States, urging them to remain enrolled in their academic programs and avoid unauthorized leave or absenteeism, as this could result in visa cancellation and disqualification from future travel.
Akinlabi further noted that U.S. consular officers are increasingly cautious about granting tourist visas to individuals suspected of traveling with the sole aim of giving birth, thereby securing citizenship for their children.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to working with the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to prevent the imposition of broader visa restrictions on Nigerian travelers.
The agency concluded by urging all Nigerians to comply with U.S. immigration rules to protect the integrity of international travel and ensure continued access to global opportunities.
