The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted continued thunderstorms and heavy rain across Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday, advising the public and airline operators to take precautions.
In its weather outlook released Saturday in Abuja, NiMet predicted localised thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon or evening over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and southern Kaduna States. The North Central region will begin with partly cloudy skies, while isolated thunderstorms are likely later in the day across Plateau, FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Kogi States.
The southern region is expected to have a cloudy morning with chances of storms over Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta. Thunderstorms may later affect Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Ekiti, and Bayelsa.
On Monday, sunny skies are expected in the north, except parts of Adamawa, Kaduna, and Taraba, which may experience isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
North Central will remain sunny in the morning, with later storms in Plateau, FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa. The south will face intervals of sunshine with chances of thunderstorms across Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, and Delta.
Tuesday’s forecast continues with sunny skies in the north but slight chances of thunderstorms in Taraba. Later, more thunderstorms are expected across parts of Adamawa and Kaduna. North Central states like Benue and Kogi may also be affected.
The southern states will likely experience morning and evening thunderstorms, especially in Imo, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, and Bayelsa.
NiMet urged Nigerians to remain hydrated, stay in ventilated spaces, and avoid peak sun hours due to rising temperatures. Citizens are advised to practise good hygiene, wear masks, and avoid crowded areas to reduce infection risks. Airline operators should obtain NiMet’s specific weather updates for planning and safety.
