Former Oyo Governor, Dr. Victor Olunloyo, Passes Away at 90

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former governor of Oyo State, has passed away just days shy of his 90th birthday, according to a statement released by his family on Sunday.

The family’s statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” was signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi, and it expressed both sorrow and gratitude. It reads, “With heavy hearts but a sense of gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, a mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat, just a few days before his 90th birthday.”

Dr. Olunloyo held numerous notable positions during his life, including being the first Rector of both Ibadan Polytechnic and Kwara State Polytechnic. He was also the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife. His distinguished service to both the nation and humanity has left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and the country as a whole.

The family has requested privacy as they prepare for his funeral arrangements and expressed gratitude for the public’s understanding during this difficult time.

In 2024, Dr. Olunloyo had publicly debunked rumors of his death, which had circulated the previous year. At that time, he reassured the press, saying, “I’m still here, not yet gone.” He also reflected on his long life, saying, “I’ve been lucky. My father passed away at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I’m 89. I’ve crossed the expected life age.”

The news of his passing marks the end of an era for many who were influenced by his work and contributions throughout his life. His legacy, both in education and public service, continues to inspire many.
