Corps members have been urged to utilize the opportunities of the service year to build bridges across the different ethnic and socio-cultural differences of the country and create long-lasting relationships with mutual benefits.
The Director General of National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu stated this in his address to Corps Members at Niger State Orientation Camp in Paiko, likewise their counterparts in Kaduna State Orientation Camp at Government College, Kurmi Mashi, Kaduna, and Zamfara State Temporary Orientation Camp at UBEC Training Centre, Sokoto Bye-pass Lalan, Gusau.
He said the essence of the service year was to foster national unity and integration, adding that all Corps Members must learn and assimilate the cultural values of their host communities.
General Nafiu also advised the Corps members to acquire new vocational skills through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme in order to become job creators.
He counselled them to start from the in-camp training and end with the post-camp training in order to perfect their skills.
Speaking further, General Nafiu urged them to serve as good ambassadors of their families, institutions, and the NYSC by exhibiting good conduct at all times.
He advised the Corps Members to embark on developmental community development projects that would add value to their host communities and also improve their standards of living.
“NYSC gives you the platform to understand Nigeria and appreciate Nigeria. We have put in a lot of camp activities that will make you more focused as responsible leaders. I urge you to use social media responsibly. The NYSC is a viable scheme that has continued to integrate Nigerians.
I challenge you today to stay focused and not be distracted. Don’t attract undue publicity to yourselves, but be respectful to constituted authorities”, the DG said.
The NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab in her camp report to the Director General said a total of Nine Hundred and Eighty-Six Corps Members comprising Five Hundred and Forty-Two males and Four Hundred and Forty-Four females were in camp.
She stated further that the Corps Members were highly disciplined and had adjusted to the rules and regulations governing the Orientation Course.
Similarly, the Kaduna State Coordinator, Mrs Murna Efeke Dadaza informed the Director General that a total of 2,545 Corps Members comprising 1,734, with 863 males and 871 females for Kaduna and 811 comprising 528 males with 283 females dislodged Corps Members from the FCT had been registered.
In the same vein, the Zamfara State Coordinator, Malam Muhammed Lawan Ahmed informed General Nafiu that all the 611 Corps Members made up of 414 males and 197 females had adapted to their new environment and were responding positively to all camp activities.
“There is a high level of synergy among camp all officials which has accounted for the successes we have recorded since we resumed camp”, he said.
