CAF Raises WAFCON 2024 Winner’s Prize Money to $1 Million

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in the prize money for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the tournament winners now set to receive a record $1 million.

This marks a 45% increase in the total prize pool for the continental women’s football showpiece, underlining CAF’s ongoing commitment to promoting women’s football across Africa.

According to the new breakdown released by CAF, the runners-up will take home $500,000, while the third and fourth-place teams will receive $350,000 and $300,000, respectively.

Teams that reach the quarter-final stage will also not leave empty-handed, each earning $200,000. Additionally, teams finishing third and fourth in the group stage will receive $150,000 and $125,000, respectively.

The 2024 edition of WAFCON will take place in Morocco, from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26. The Banyana Banyana of South Africa are the defending champions, having clinched the title in the previous edition.

CAF’s decision has been widely applauded as a step towards bridging the gender gap in football rewards on the continent and encouraging greater investment in the women’s game.
