The All Progressives Congress has sharply criticised the African Democratic Congress over its recent comments on the state burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing them as insensitive and disgraceful.
In a statement released on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, the ruling party accused the ADC of politicising a solemn national moment and making disparaging remarks aimed at President Bola Tinubu’s tribute to the late leader.
Earlier in the week, President Tinubu had described Buhari as a “good, decent, and honourable man” whose commitment to national service and values such as discipline and integrity stood out. The tribute was delivered during a special Federal Executive Council session in Abuja held in Buhari’s honour.
The ADC had responded by labelling the tribute a political stunt, questioning the sincerity of the gestures from the Presidency. But the APC has condemned the reaction, stating that such a display of criticism during a period of mourning reflects poorly on the character of the opposition party.
According to the APC, the ADC lacks both empathy and a basic understanding of state protocol, accusing it of attempting to score political points at the expense of decency and tradition. The party further warned Nigerians to be cautious of what it called the ADC’s reckless brand of politics.
The statement also praised President Tinubu for what it described as a compassionate and patriotic act of honouring a predecessor who served Nigeria with dedication. It noted that beyond politics, Buhari was a father and elder statesman deserving of respect and dignity in death.
The APC urged opposition parties to act responsibly and avoid exploiting moments of national grief for cheap political relevance.
